Tic-tac-toe is a game that I played when I was little. If my parent or friend played with me, they might let me win. But as I got older, I learned that you should not play for a win right away. You should try to make the game end in a draw by playing for stalemate. When your opponent tries to counter this method, you will often have an opportunity to win or the game will end in a draw because both players are good at it.
I think that the point of Tic-Tac-Toe is to learn. It\’s not about winning or losing. You can both win and lose by playing to a draw. You might be surprised to find out that Tic-Tac-Toe is one of the fundamental games used for teaching strategy and tactics because of this point.
In our business, we want to win as soon as possible and sometimes we don\’t pay attention to making small moves. An opponent that moves slowly and steadily has a better chance of winning than one who does not.
Military history has many examples of mistakes made by the United States military. They were usually against smaller and weaker opponents who were better prepared.
Sun Tzu wrote in The Art of War:
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.
Tic-Tac-Toe is a fun game. It is a good way to learn about yourself and your opponent. Business is also like this. You need to know your company and the market before you start it up. You should be well prepared before making any big decisions or changes in your company.
