How to Plan a Great Interview Podcast

Building brand identity and authority is an ongoing process that never stops for the successful entrepreneur. One way to build authority in ANY niche market is to create a podcast. A podcast is a great way to share valuable content with your audience while you are building your authority at the same time, even if you are new to the information. Interview podcasts are a way to support other influencers in your niche market, building valuable content for YOUR audience by introducing relevant information from other experts.

Build On the Shoulders of Giants

Interview podcasts allow even a new podcaster to borrow the expertise of leaders in their niche market by building upon the valuable content your guest has to share. Finding the right guest is the first step, so be prepared to do some research.

The following tips will help you get started planning your strategy BEFORE you do your first interview.

Choose Interesting Guests

Building authority for your business using an interview podcast strategy is an easy way to begin as a novice podcaster. To get the most of this strategy you need to know what topics are interesting from your audience’s perspective. What you personally find interesting and exciting may be entirely off-target for your audience. To hit the mark with your audience you will need to know more about them and their needs.

  • Why are they listening?
  • What benefit are they hoping to find by spending time listening to what YOU have to share?

Do Your Research

If you prepare for success, then success will prepare a place for you at the winner’s table! Do the research and planning to ensure your success. Get granular about the details and what you need to do with every interview to create the best experience for your guest and your audience.

Define YOUR workflow first, and do the research you need to do to produce your podcast.

  • How will I record the interview with my guest?
  • What software do I need to use to produce the finished product?
  • How will I deliver the podcast to my audience?
  • How will I notify my audience about the details of the coming podcast?

These are some of the important questions you must ask in the research phase of building your authority using this strategy. Start with what you have available and build from there. Most of us have a smartphone, and with software available for FREE and some research on how it is done, most of us already have what we need to begin.

Know Your Subject

Research the topic of the interview you have planned with your guest. While it is beneficial to borrow on the expertise of another influencer and create a podcast about new information you are not completely familiar with, do your research and gain a foundational understanding of the topic that will guide you. This will help you to know how to ask the right questions and provide the most value for your audience.

Write Your Guest’s Bio

Interesting and valuable guests do not always have prepared biographies you will need to introduce and promote your podcast. You will want to include important information about your guest that will help your audience relate to what this guest may have to offer, and do not forget to get profile pictures or images for your promotional campaigns. Here is a basic and brief list of information to include in the bio.

  • first and last name
  • company or brand
  • current position
  • mission/value statement
  • top three accomplishments
  • contact info

WHERE Does Audience Intersect

It is not good enough to find brilliant and exciting guests to an audience that cannot find a way to relate to the interview. It is of the highest priority to identify the areas where your guest intersects with your audience’s needs. Keep your topics focused on solutions and value for your audience. If your audience cannot see why the information your guest has to deliver can benefit them, they will move on to another resource.

Do NOT rely on your guest to make this important distinction. As the host, you will need to know your audience well. You will need to know their capacity for applying the new information your guest has to offer. It is YOUR job to extract the important information from your guest and lead your audience to make the connection and determine its value.

Pre-Send Your Questions

Develop a list of questions you would like to ask in the interview. Use the guide provided in the next section to come up with your questions. Once you have a good set of questions, send them to your guest. Give your guest the chance to prepare and shine on your broadcast.

How to Ask Good Interview Questions for Podcasting

A great interview is a win/win situation for your guest AND the host, so prepare your questions carefully.

How to Ask Great Questions

  • Avoid basic questions.
  • Never ask simple YES/NO questions.
  • Do not ask leading questions.
  • Ask one question at a time.
  • Do NOT refer to your list of questions.
  • Focus on HOW and WHY questions.
  • Begin … AT THE BEGINNING.

Inform Guest About Your Show and Audience

Invest the time to prepare your guest before the interview. Your guest needs to understand what will be of interest to YOUR specific audience, as well as the mission behind your podcast. Context is important, so give your guest the benefit of why you started your podcast, what you hope to provide for your audience and any specific information that will help ensure that both you, your guest, and your audience all have a great experience.

Minimize Distractions

Block your time to remove all distractions during the interview. Turn off your phone or alerts from other devices that might distract from the broadcast. There is reason broadcasters have an ON-AIR sign blinking on the entrance to the studio during production. If your living room or kitchen table is your make-shift studio while you are in the process of building your business empire, do not let that stop you! Until you can build a proper studio, simply post a sign on the door and warn your family and friends that when your sign is posted – DO NOT DISTURB.

Take Your Interview Seriously

Hosting a successful podcast takes planning and work. If you treat your business with the respect you expect from others and take your new podcast seriously, others will, too. If you treat it like a joke or a casual past=time, your audience will reflect that and do the same. Our goal is to monetize your podcast in as many ways as possible over time. That takes effort and expertise, so take the podcast seriously and it can deliver a serious income stream leading to YOUR bank account in the future.
