When we have control over our own lives and self, we have the ability to manage anything that emerges when life throws us a curveball. Of course no one has total authority on anything–but when something or someone disrupts your life – whether positive or negative – having an established strategy of time management that keeps you moving forward in the midst of disruption is not only useful, but can also be critical.
When strategizing your time management scheme for today let\’s factor all details of what will happen tomorrow into account; It might sound like an easy process now, but when we look closely and begin calculating all aspects of what it will take to accomplish our mission …it can take quite a while to capture everything relevant. An incomplete view of what it actually takes to accomplish your goal, whether business or personal, can easily lead to endlessly creating your to-do lists, which often seem to get bigger, rather than smaller.
Learn to Love the Math
Successful entrepreneurs have a saying that goes, TiIME equals MONEY. Building any sort of company requires time and energy. Entrepreneurs are never able to cut corners when it concerns what they put into their personal lives as well.
Building a business comes with real costs, and there is no way to avoid this expense entirely … usually both are involved in some shape or form! Entrepreneurs who don\’t account sufficiently for their own value as human beings can quickly feel overwhelmed when they see how much work goes into making sure everything runs smoothly at home every day while also managing outside obligations such as family life too — especially since you are throwing money away if you\’re not charging anything extra when your customers want more from you and your business.
There are many benefits from having a complete picture of your own affairs: Having planned ahead means less stress. Knowing exactly where every single penny goes can help build motivation because there isn\’t any last minute panic about money. Money (and time) is math, and without realistic and honest valuation about the cost in time to deliver a project, we have no way to calculate the cost of many of our decisions.
Once you start your calculations you will see that time is a plus and minus strategy. If you went to school wondering why they taught math, you will soon learn why, since learning math is not only memorizing your multiplication tables and learning to divide, but also learning the calculations that lead to your ultimate success. In order to add and subtract time, you must first calculate time with family, friends, work, self, and so on. You must also calculate ‘problem areas’ that may occur. For example, is your computer going to work continuously without problems? NO! Therefore, you need to calculate large and small disasters into the equation of time management. This is the beginning process of controlling time management, but it is nowhere near the full details of completing the process.
The fact is – we all have areas that need thorough research to bring us to the point of balanced production. When we calculate time management, we must include details such as, entertainment, lounging, relaxing, meals, dressing, and everything that makes us who we are. If you are spending too much time in one area, you can cut back time by spending more time in important areas. For example, if it takes you 45 minutes in the morning to get motivated, it is most likely a result of procrastination and lack of preparation. To save time here, you will need to think!
Why is it taking me 45 minutes to get dressed in the morning?
The solution is taking a few minutes each night to pick your attire for the next day, so that when you get up in the morning you only need to dress. The fact is, any person can get up in the morning, put on make-up, clothes, and even style their hair in less than 45 minutes. Even models, actors, and actresses are limited to how much time they spend on dressing. If you think about it, when women go on stage for a beauty pageant, they are limited in how much time they spend on getting ready for the show. The producers or directors invested some of their time to make sure that their time management scheme was running smoothly, by controlling what their actors were doing with their time. Entrepreneurs play all of the roles in their own productions! Mastering time management makes you a better actor, director, and producer!
Hack Your Daily Routines
Where can I gain more time by changing my routines?
Where does it make sense for me to spend money in order to get the most out of myself?
These are all things that we should consider when mapping a better plan which will build your business and benefit your entire life!
I spent 50 years working within the hospitality/restaurant industry where I was required to wear standardized company attire – mostly black pants & white dress shirt or polo tee/shirt. If my employer required black pants and a company-issued shirt (usually only one or two shirts), I would spend MY money and buy three more shirts to cover a full 5-day workweek. My strategy was to have enough of what was required to dress fully in a clean company approved uniform for the entire week. I often boosted the number to include a spare … just in case I picked up an extra shift! Staying fully prepared I could wake up late and be properly dressed and out of the door within minutes!
Spend Money to Save Time
Now, I am an entrepreneur building my business. When I first made the move into entrepreneurship, my closet was filled with black pants (lots of khaki pants, too!), a plethora of white shirts, and a mountain of branded tee-shirts and polo shirts. My off-time wardrobe was not quite business professional, nor was it comfortable for everyday use. Every day I would need to search through the pile and see what I could mix together to arrive at something comfortable and appropriate for my day of business. It took me over 3 years to clearly identify how much it was costing me in time each day just to get comfortably dressed. Once I realized the cost/benefit of spending $200 on a comfortable and appropriate work-day wardrobe, I not only gained back valuable time, but I also lessened the decision fatigue of picking my attire each day! I could put the cost of that decision to better use later in the day.
As entrepreneurs, it doesn’t matter what your business is, we must stay focused on many things, yet have something specific to accomplish everyday that will lead us closer toward our primary goal. Even one single step forward can be enough motivation! When there’s no other option but to try again tomorrow, we can still stay focused and begin where we left off. If we have planned our work, when setbacks happen, (and they will), we can assess what has changed and still have our original blueprint. We can make a new map of the route to take to still reach our primary goal.
