Navigating your Online Business in the midst of Uncertainty

I tend to refer to the new normal of online businesses as “The Uncertainty Principle”, which is a very loose idea that I have been working with to talk about how online business should be run.

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word “uncertainty” is uncertainty in the stock market. There are so many things that can happen on a daily basis, and not much one can do about it.

You can’t go out and buy stock; you can’t sell your stocks; you can’t predict what will happen tomorrow; and none of us really knows what will happen over the next few years.

We are currently in another war! Let’s call it World War X. This time; it is not humans fighting against each other but more than 175 countries fighting together. Even though it is better than what it was in 2020, it is still an evolving event that changes lives and businesses.

However, this isn’t always so true for digital businesses. It isn’t only uncertainty in terms of stock prices. (as an example)

But, some online businesses have experienced uncertainty! Even those that want to go online have experienced fear of taking their business online. We all go through it, but what if I tell you that there is another enemy in our midst…the mind!

The key to any online business is to think outside the box, or even better, remove the box to expand your thinking. No matter what your business entails:

  • Selling your own product.
  • Selling other people\’s products.
  • Selling a service.
  • Selling content.
  • Selling an idea.

Your Mindset is the Enemy

It\’s time to change your mindset.

The internet is a big place, filled with strange people and places, some of which may be hostile, and some of which are friendly. There are people who talk to strange people online and who have an amazing time. There are people who create great content and make money doing it. There are people who live way off the grid in secluded places all around the world. There are people who travel, work remotely, and make a living making money from their hobbies. There are people who fall in love with their phones and use them every single day to do work that they enjoy doing. Some of these things we do consciously because we want to benefit from them; others we do unconsciously because they’re fun or convenient to us.

It’s not just about actions; it’s also about attitudes: If you think that everyone is online for the same reason as you — for fun or convenience — then you’re missing out on a lot of opportunities. If you think that everyone is online for social reasons — like dating or making friends — then you are so wrong.

Everyone has different motivations, but if these motivations can be channeled into something that will help your business thrive (or even expand), then it becomes easier for companies to succeed online, by leveraging this universal aspect of human behavior instead of trying to fit specific brands into a niche market.

The Beginning of a New Path

Businesses of all sizes are becoming hyper-connected. In fact, it’s a cliché that the internet is changing everything. The world has never been more connected. If you can tap into that idea and step away from channeling your thoughts into owning just a small space of online real estate, then it is time to begin a new path. Think about what you are currently offering and think how you can connect with other like minded businesses and create a network that branches out, increasing your footprint online. It is going to take a different mindset because you will probably need to learn to share your ideas with other businesses, brainstorm some weird ideas, but it is worth the try. Who knows where it might lead you. Do not let your mind remain the enemy.
